GENERAL ORDER ESTABLISHING
THE OLIN W. THOMPSON, III JUSTICE AWARD
It is with great honor and appreciation that the U.S. District Court for the District of
Rhode Island announces the creation of the:
OLIN W. THOMPSON, III JUSTICE AWARD (“AWARD”).
Chief Judge John J. McConnell, Jr. notes, that “Olin W. Thompson, III served admirably
as a Federal Public Defender, fiercely advocating for justice for his clients. He was an
outstanding public servant with an accomplished record of hard work, dedication, and
commitment. He earned the deep respect from his peers, judges, court staff, and opposing
prosecutors.”
It is hereby ordered that this Award be established to recognize and honor outstanding
professionals in the legal community who serve with great distinction as a model of civility in
the pursuit of justice and who have made significant contributions to the profession and the
community.
It is further ordered that the District Court Conference Committee of the U.S. District
Court for the District of Rhode Island shall convene bi-annually or each year there is a district
conference to nominate and award the OLIN W. THOMPSON, III JUSTICE AWARD to an a
individual, and the Chief Judge or his or her designee and the Chair of the District Court
Conference Committee shall present the Award to the selected recipient at the District
Conference.
