An officer appointed by some general officer com- manding a body or force of troops, for police duty, or for the general mainte- nance of order and the repression of all of- fences in connection with military occupa- tion. He or his assistants may, at any time, arrest and detain for trial, persons subject to military law committing of- fences, and may carry into execution any punishments to be inflicted in pursuance of a court martial.
