FIVE MILE ACT

- An act of parliament passed in 1665, against nonconformists, whereby ministers of that body were prohibited from coming within five miles of any corporate town, or place where they had preached or lectured.- Brown. An act of parlia- ment passed in 1665, 17 Chas. II. c. 2, for- bidding nonconformists who refused to take the oath of non-resistance to come within five miles of any corporation in which they had preached since the passing of the act of oblivion in 1660. This act was nullified by the toleration act of 1689.
